15th Annual Ag Barbecue Celebrates Ag Industry and Provides Scholarships
The fifteenth annual Utah Agriculture Products Barbecue (Ag Day) will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Utah State University in Logan. The annual event precedes the football match-up later that day between the Aggies and the Thunderbirds in USU's Romney Stadium.
According to Jed Christenson, Salt Lake City, chairperson of the Ag Day Organizing Committee and Director of Marketing and Development for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, the 2009 Utah Agriculture Products Barbecue will be a great all-you-can-eat feast of Utah-produced food to be enjoyed by those attending this year's event, slated for 3:00- 5:00 p.m. on the practice field west of the Stan Laub Center at USU.
"This feast features Utah beef, pork, lamb and turkey, dairy products like cheese, a variety of flavors of milk and ice cream, apples, corn on the cob, onion rings, a garden salad and the trimmings, all produced by farmers and ranchers right here in Utah. More than a dozen agricultural commodity groups participate.
This year there will also be live country music provided by the band Rough Stock.
"Afterward, those in attendance can go root for the Aggies at the Utah State-Southern Utah University football game, which should be a really great game," says Christenson.
Christenson said the barbecue admission price of $8 per person for adults and $5 for children eleven and under is not only a great value but plays an important part in strengthening Utah agriculture through education. "We have many young men and women in the state who aspire to careers in agriculture, particularly production agriculture.
"This event is building a scholarship endowment set up in USU's College of Agriculture, which will help our young people get the knowledge and skills they need to excel as future producers, scientists, and leaders in Utah's agricultural industry," he said. "It also gives the industry an opportunity to showcase the outstanding products grown and processed right here in Utah. Our food products are second to none!" he said.
Christenson said the state's government, agricultural industry organizations, agribusinesses, and the College of Agriculture at Utah State University are chipping in to put on this important food promotion and scholarship event.
